The eCommerce and Fulfilment challenges

Words by FOR

Organisations require a constant review of their operations in light of the scale and speed of change. Not only are consumers demanding improved services and reduced speed to fulfil, but technology is having to address agility and keeping pace with the speed of change. It’s like painting the Forth Road Bridge.

Here are some pointers that require consideration by any omni channel retailer to meet the demand of their channels:

Technology

  • Lack of experience and depth in analytics

  • Complexity and poor integration

  • Old legacy, poor latency and no flexibility.

  • New technologies are breaking down boundaries.

  • Tools we are used to are changing

  • Service times (cycles) cannot be supported by old technologies

Service

  • Moving from next day to same day

  • Adapt to an internal agility

  • Returns will increase

  • Taking payments up to 10-15 days after the shipment

  • Largest inventory supplier has now become returns

Physical

  • Use all pools of inventory

  • Move away from large central distribution centre(s)

  • Property is getting ever more expensive

  • Labour is now becoming too costly and in short supply.

  • Larger automation has not been suitable for smaller operations

  • Environmental impact will influence more of our operations and services

We love to see retailers using technology for the right reasons

Costa Coffee has just announced plans to allow their customers to 'Top up and pay with a cup".

Two great reasons for doing this:

  1. Ties the customer into the retailer whilst promoting the brand

  2. All the positive eco points that this brand will garner over their competitors

Worth remembering that it was only back in August 2018 that Costa Coffee was bought by Coca-Cola for £3.9bn.

Having been in industry and retail for over 35 years, it was time to take control. Ray leads the strategy, business change and optimisation areas.

Experienced in Retail and FMCG for the majority of those years, the focus is helping organisations adopt digital and improve their multi channel offerings. Simply put, leveraging what they already have.

A grounding in supply chain within the FMCG sectors has led Olga to develop and offer a more deeper analytical approach to problem solving, hence advising us when we need it.

Constantly challenging why businesses fail to understand the failings of their learnings.

Working within the supply chain arena over 30 years Tim has an ability to work at both the detail level – addressing a specific operational issue and at the strategic level – positioning a supply chain to serve the changing needs of an organisation, adapt to new markets and deploy new technologies. Tim held a number of exec level positions in major retailers, ran large scale distribution operations, implemented supply chain strategy and designed and built major fulfilment centres.
